Morbid I know but I just heard about the tragic news about Dr. Dre suffering from a brain aneurysm (he’s miraculously in stable condition at the moment) but holy shit. Not even a week into the new year and already we are getting some scares. https://www.tmz.com/2021/01/05/dre-suffers-brain-aneursym-la-health/ Any notable people in the world that passes this year, raise a glass in here.
I've considered Dr. Dre's music and production style one of my biggest influences if not THE biggest influence for me. I was shocked to see the news about him yesterday but glad that it was quickly circulated that he's recovering well and seems to be doing ok. RPL here as well - I also consider Dre, Snoop, Ice Cube, etc. to pretty much be my real "Black Experience" teachers. I grew up mostly in northeast Ohio in a suburb in a school system that was considered "rich". We had 5 or less black people in our graduating class from elementary school through high school give or take a few. And in school you learn about the past like civil rights movements, slavery, etc. and it's pretty much taught that all of that is all over. Then in the early 90's when the above mentioned names and more were making big hits and "gangsta rap" was so huge, that really did make an impression on me and made me think about how life really can be different still for black people and not everybody lives the way I do. Sounds silly, but I am sincere about this and always hold their music in high regard for what it taught me about other cultures in our current time and not just stuff from the past.
For sure. People are quick to point out his sketchy past with violence against women and I very much wish that wasn't part of his past. He's been remorseful and denounced past behavior, but, still sucks.
As one of the whitest of white boys from the suburbs of Happy Valley Utah, Dre’s music made a tremendous impact on my impressionable mind at the young age of 11 years old when 2001 came out. I asked my mother if I could have it. And to my shock she got me the edited version. I listened to that thing non stop. I memorised Forgot About Dre and the rest of the record and impressed all of my friends. It turned me on to Snoop Dogg, Xibit, the late great Nate Dogg, and of course Eminem. So many good memories tied to that record. And now I have that amazing album on vinyl sitting happily amongst the rest of my collection.
Not to derail but I read the real version is hard to come buy and the Amazon ones are almost always the edited (even if listed otherwise). I need that one for the collection
Man that just made me realize how ridiculous it is that I do not have The Chronic or 2001 on vinyl. I will rectify that soon. I have 3 older brothers and growing up I would hang out with the one closest to me in age (2 years older) along with a neighbor friend that was his age. I'll never forget sitting in the neighbor friend's basement watching MTV and catching "Let Me Ride" and "Nothing But A G Thang" videos and that kind of stuff. Blew my fuckin mind as an 8-9 year old.
Oh, I got the real one. I am aware of this issue with the vinyl. I randomly saw it at a grocery store here and lo and behold it wasn’t the edited version!
Is there a different SKU I should be on the look out for? I guess I have some homework on discogs tonight.
Yes. This one: https://www.discogs.com/Dr-Dre-2001/release/1544966 It’ll have the tracks censored on the back but it’ll have the parental advisory label on the front. The key is to look for the **red** Back to Black sticker as well and that should be the main indicator because some of the records will have the parental advisory label and still be clean.

She was great in the Police Academy movies. You knew what the bit was, but she still made it funny every time she got mad and went beast mode.
