I happen to like the Call. I like the Nick parts, but SA could have thought about it more. When one of them is kind of singing about a topic and the other comes in and raps about how the song is flowing, it sometimes works.
I think I appreciate SL more than I'm in love with it, if that makes sense. Did anyone here read Steven Hyden's "Escape From Pop Purgatory" on 311 around the time of its release? That tainted it for me for a long time, even though he did throw a few rightful props their way.
Ebb & Flow / Great Divide are both terrible songs that would have been right at home with the other lukewarm tepid material on DTOM. I don't know why people cling to the idea that reclaiming that sound is even possible. Nick hasn't been able to rap in about 15 years.
Solar Flare and Waiting are clearly equal or superior to Ebb and Flow and Great Divide.
All equally uninspired bad songs.
"Sand Dollars" "Make It Rough" etc are just as cornball as "Waiting"
This is the definitive guide to redeemable songs from the last 10 years of 311
Sun Come Through
Rock On (rare tolerable Nick Hexum rap)
And A Ways To Go
Made in the Shade
Wildfire (SA's rap is horrid, though)
Places That the Mind Goes (an example of a "pop" direction that works)
One and the Same
Face In The Wind
Is Places really a 311 song though?
SA's rap is my favorite part of Wildfire - absolutely crushes my soul when he hits the "look at my face and if I am crying, its 'cause I'm at the bank of love and imma die laughing, haha!" part.
everyone loves the twin guitar leads closing Wildfire, but tbh I often skip to the next track right at the breakdown point (nice breakdown but its not one of 311's better breakdowns, aside from the bit where Nick reaches a crescendo with the harmony vocals right before the kinda mediocre twin guitar harmony - for 311 standards)
Horrible, borderline derails the song
The backing vocals in Places puts that song at a tie with GF for most un-311est song ever. TTCOF may as well be Homebrew compared to that cringe.
But I mean....is it REALLY?
Good Feeling. Neither song has any trace elements of the 311 sound.
Make It Rough?!!! You're fucking retarded
Um, what’s up with all this Stereolithic hate? It’s prob the most listened to album for me after Soundsystem. It just screams what modern 311 should sound like. The only track I would put at low tier is “Showdown” but some parts of the song saved it.
Mosaic has some amazing tracks. Shitting on “Wild Fire” confuses me. Also when I listen to “Places” I just always pretend it’s SAs backing vocals, and improves the song.
