In some ways, Mosaic is 311's best work. Definitely their best headphone album and better than Stereolithic imo.

I think they explored more realms and sound the best they have since FC. The swagger is back.

Listened to Stereolithic for first time in months. Its def a more consistent album. Its more "centered or level" lack of better word. No major lows or songs I skip

I like Mosaic more still. Its way more versatile and creative. The highs are just as high as SL, if not more. And the songs are way better live than most SL

But Simple True is the shit!!!

The "highs" are what keep Stereolithic above Mosaic for me. I don't give too much thought to outside help - like you mentioned elsewhere - but if the two albums ever got into an arcade Pit Fighter scenario, I would take that into consideration.

Mosaic *sounds* SO SO SO good. It's mixed / engineered / produced / whatever disgustingly well. And it has songs to back it up. I think the "not leaving my CD player (yeah that's right) without being replaced" time table surpasses Stereolithic.

But Mosaics highs and lows are like getting a plate with a nice steak cooked the way you like it (but with some surprises the chef threw in that you didn't ask for and weren't sure about at first, but you realized were actually delicious), but having it come with a side of half-popped popcorn with store-brand pancake syrup on top, for some reason. And to drink is a nice DIPA but with mayo in it.

Stereolithic is like getting a burger, cooked maybe a little more than you'd like, but it has all the toppings you want. And to wash it down, a solid dunkel. It doesn't do anything groundbreaking, but that's the meal I want to eat again, and more often.

Stereolithic will forever have a special place in my heart for the fact that for 13 years they continued to churn out albums below their potential (with a few highlights on each). But then Ebb and Flow with its familiar, Transistorish tone, soaring chorus, and poetic lyrics pulls you in. First of 15 songs. Still, I expected a drop off in quality. They did the opposite. Some of their strongest songs are toward the end, including a new personal favorite (Made in the Shade). Stereolithic, while a construction of old concepts and familiar ideas, still had enough "new" swag to give it maturity that compliments it's familiarity. It's a surprisingly strong album that revived my confidence in them to live up to their potential.

Then came Mosaic. All new concepts. Improved production techniques. 17 songs! Lots of diversity. It's way more "fun". It's way more confident with the way they really lean into new ideas and finally fully complete them. Their most collaborative album ever, with something for everyone. As mentioned, the highs are home runs. Interestingly, their "lows" are beloved by many (myself included). Feldy's involvement ads a sad bit of controversy, but his additions are not black marks on an otherwise perfect album. They are additions.

Mosaic is a better album. But I love Stereolithic.

Face in the Wind, Days of 88, and Too Late themselves make it better than Stereolithic. I love Stereolithic, but I don't find myself going back to it much. It has a lot of good songs but not many greats. After 250 311 songs have been put out, I take even more emphasis on great songs. Face in the Wind and Days of 88 are top 10 songs for me and I know I'll always keep coming back to them. Too Late is also top 25. Then songs like Syntax, Hey Yo, and The Night Is Young which I qualify as really good, I like more than the really good songs from Stereolithic.

Still way too new. I feel like Stereo will age better, but both albums are good.

I'm going to bump this.. as it is still relevant.. and there could be some new members that haven't voted.. Plus now that the honeymoon phase is over... I want to see if Mosaic really does have the lasting power everyone said it would have.

For me, Stereolithic is the superior album and is aging much better. I place Stereo at #2 currently, Mosaic is near the middle of my album rankings.

While Mosaic has some highs that are on part with the best tracks on Stereo, songs like Wildfire and Too Late, the fact that it has what this board overwhelmingly feels is the the worst 311 song of all time, TTCoF, among other extremely hated tracks like Places that the Mind Goes, single handedly brings it down below Stereo even ignoring other important factors. I personally put both of those songs in my 311 bottom 5. Not to mention TMTT which is just an attempt to rehash Amber's radio success, Stereo really had no generic radio friendly sunny surf pop song. The lead single, Five of Everything, was unique and fresh. There's several songs on Mosaic that are worse than basically everything on Stereo.

I also feel like Stereo has more highs. Almost every song on Stereo sans 1 or 2 is an above average 311 song for me whereas Mosaic has a lot of just OK songs. In fact, I have a hard time even picking out a "bad" song on Stero.

Stereo is also a much more complete experience. Mosaic wasn't designed to be listened from beginning to end, at the band members' own admittance, while Stereo obviously is with it including song linking sounds. Mosaic was made to be pieced apart into playlists. So that matters a lot when comparing which is the best album.

Winner, Stereolithic. It's a better overall experience with far less lows and just as many highs as Mosaic if not more.

If Mosaic was all Scotch it would be the clear winner. But because its not, Idk if I would still put it over Stereolithic.

I think the highs on Mosaic are equal to or greater than Stereolithic, but Mosaic clearly has lower lows. The production is still better on Mosaic, but that alone cant put it over the top.

Stereolithic is similar to Transistor that its a musical journey. They are all similar in tone and feel while still being extremely eclectic. It is the better listening experience start to finish.

    Already did.

Oh and adding Serenity/Wind chimes into Vape n Away to the end of SL is a must. It really ties the album together

I haven't been listening to either album lately.

I think maybe I'll pop each one in and ride that train all the way to its destination, see which one is better.
