I expect SA to release a Christmas song cover of his own. I may take heat for this because of SA's heritage, but god damn it, I'd love to hear Los Stellarians cover Feliz Navidad. Throw in the horns and everything, and I bet it'd sound awesome. I love that fuckin song.

(I would enjoy an SA-original rap for it, similar to what he did in the live version of Didn't I.)

I bet one of the things SAs wife likes the most is how much he sweats when they make the zex.

I agree with this, but when I think of 311 and album covers I think the cover for blue is the quintessential album cover. It’s not the most creative in terms of content, but I think the creativity is in it’s simplicity. No bells and whistles, just the logo in blue. Almost as if it’s saying “We’re not telling you what’s on or classify this album, but you’re going to have a kickass time listening”. Really that is 311, they don’t fit perfectly into a genre but you will rock the fuck out listening to them.

I agree completely that the blue album is 311’s signature album, in terms of it perfectly defining and summing up their sound. I also agree that that album cover is the most iconic. But I was speaking of the transistor cover being the best in terms of artistic merit.

Although I like Transistor’s cover, I have one complaint about it, which, I suppose, is obsolete now that the CD era is, for all intents and purposes, over. It’s nitpick-y, but when you open up the CD case, there’s a cut-off piece of a transistor in the spine that doesn’t mesh with the plain blue sky in the rest of the image behind the disc notch.

So that one little imperfection is why I put Soundsystem’s art on top. Though it might be an irrelevant argument if we’re talking purely about the cover itself and not how a part of the cover messes up the interior art, especially now that the flaw is specific to a dying format and covers are now mostly seen either on vinyl or as a .jpeg.

True, but there’s also artistic merit in being able to convey a message in a minimalistic image like blue.

I’m taking in terms of the artwork of the actual cover. The actual picture. Not in relation to the music or it being the band’s breakthrough. What you’re saying and what i’m saying is both right, you’re just confusing it

I understand the importance of subtlety and minimalism, I see what you’re saying. You’re right but that doesn’t directly relate to what my point was.

I don’t think I’m confusing it, I completely understand your point and you aren’t necessarily wrong. I’m only stating why blue was the first to pop in my head when this topic was first brought up. I love everything about Transistor and that includes the art. It’s my favorite album and has been for at least 17 years.

Don't love any of the band's album covers. I mean, they ain't Iron Maiden. But I'd say Blue and From Chaos are the best based solely on the vibrance.

Right, that’s a totally fair point to make. I think only blue, transistor, and soundsystem are their iconic covers. I like all 3 of them for different reasons. The band just had a certain attitude and direction during that time. A weird confidence to them.

Oh, and btw, I do actually think that blue’s cover is the most iconic in relation to the band, and you’re right in the sense that it accomplishes a lot with less

Transistor's cover is gorgeous. I wish I was eight years old and could have the transistor / meditating guy looping the top portion of my walls like those borders they sell at Bed Bath & Beyond.

But the more time passes, the more I get cemented - Blue is it. It's that beautiful logo, gradient-ly represented. It is beyond reproach.

I actually like Grassroots cover a lot, I think it fits the album's theme perfectly.

Mosaic's the illest cause I'm on it

Fucking haters on here because they didn't submit photos in time. I will never not like the Mosaic cover because I'm not a salty bitch, submitted pics as prescribed and my face is forever implanted on SA's thigh. I'm also on the cover.

Back in college an art teacher had the class do these simple painting exercises, using just colors and brush styles to convey a certain type of energy or mood. It was surprisingly fun, and at the end of the class we guessed what emotion or vibe we were going for with the answer written on the back.

I would love for 311 to approach the album art in this way. Without committing to any specific theme, just creating an energy.
