Rick just needs to stick with rapping.

Or singing with trippy reverb vocal fx.

Jesus. You harsh mother fuckers. The guy is 50.. you do realize the older you get the much more difficult it becomes to sing?.. It's like athleticism.. it just fades with age... This is why NFL players have to retire evntually.. Nick was never the worlds best singer, But for being 50 he sounds good.

Honestly if you ask me.. the part about modern 311 that always rubs me the wrong way is how on certain songs they seem way too rigid with the structure of the songs. They don't allow the songs to breath. its like they forcefully try to cram them into a strict 4 minute song and Nick and SA never allow the instruments to take over they always want to be singing over every little part. For example.. inside our home.. This song should have been a 5 to 6 minute jam with less singing.. it is a very 'wordy' song and necessarily so IMO.

I love the vocal effects on his 2nd verse of the Self Esteem cover! Exactly at 1:15.

Makes little sense when him and SA are the same age. Just bring back either transistor singing nick or grassroots shit talking nick. Those were the times when he let his voice flow naturally and didn’t try to be big singer vocalist man

I don't think Five of Everything is cheesy, but come on, Showdown definitely is! Fun song, but definitely cheesy.

I agree with you here. Five of Everything is underrated.

I enjoy both 5OE and Showdown. Neither are my favorite songs off of Stereolithic, but, I dig that shit. I don't really get what about 5OE is not to like, but I do understand why some aren't into Showdown. But, basically, fuck you.

yeah I don't know why they went HARDCORE with the 'we don't use any vocal effects. We want to sound raw like a concert' like.....dude.....No.....youre not good enough for that, sorry. PLEASE use the type of effects and reverb that were on the Blue album and Transistor , even soundsystem - they weren't HEAVY voc effects, just enough to melt into the music perfectly. There are a lot of songs that I think the 'crispness' of vocals with the grunge rock of music just do NOT mesh. No shame in that. but please.....use voc efx

I do actually like FOE, I just think it’s also kinda corny. I think it being the first song to be introduced from stereolithic really did hurt its perception. Nick said they were kicking things off with a rocker lmao. It’s just dosent fit that album at all. It fits perfectly with dark ages 311

I disagree... I think it's a darker song lyrically and fits right after Ebb and Flow, which is a pretty pessimistic song. In general I just feel like Stereolithic is a little darker (for 311). It certainly doesn't fit on Universal Pulse with all its happy happy happy stuff.

And lol, Nick's idea of a rocker is not what a lot of people's seems to be - 311 rarely just has a straight up rocker through and through. There are parts, sure, but not all through it.

It might just be delivery (like Nick on "Step off...." or SA "living in this culture can be a draaag"), but the lyrics themselves don't strike me as particularly corny at all on Five of Everything, especially not for 311 haha. Showdown, on the otherhand... SA's rap part, hahaha

No matter what I try there’s no room in my mind
No way to go round that, that’s just the way it is must I remind
I don’t pick up the phone but you still try to call
There’s nothing left to say you’ve already gotta know we’ve said it all

The story never ends, in search of something
But once we arrive it all starts again
Reaching for higher ground, the river’s rising
It keeps on flowing forever no matter what we have found

    Sometimes it seems insane
    To just keep pressing on
As if it will put out the flame
    But still the thirst remains
    Drink another drink
And somehow I still feel the same

Step off, head out, take flight, and just run
Got five of everything but I just need one
My brain telling me what I want, I need
Got five of everything but I still proceed

Help me fill up this hole
It’s gaping and out of control
It feels like I’m losing touch and it’s taking its toll
    When this wall isn’t moving
    State of things not improving
And no satisfaction in the distraction of the day

Living in this culture can be a drag
It’s just a commercial what we have
A one track mind we grab, grab, grab
We’re past being crazy, call us mad
Gone is the golden egg and the goose
And the bullshit of all hell breaking loose
    We gotta hit the boost
    Sip on the thick juice
    Disregard the bad cards
    And wake the truth

The story never ends, in search of something
But once we arrive it all starts again
Reaching for higher ground, the river’s rising
    It keeps on flowing forever

    lol:

Play that game like a neighborhood side street
anywhere you want it I don’t care where we meet
school yard, front yard, back yard, town park
I don’t think that you bite, all I hear is you bark
    to the body one shot
    wrecking ball can’t be stopped
in the lane, yeah we got this game
play through pain that’s why we came

311 rarely has a rocker through and through? Not true at all. And universal pulse was not entirely happy happy. Rock on, trouble, weightless, and and a ways to go talk about pretty deep shit for 311 standards. I actually would argue in hindsight those songs are also better than 5OE

I also agree that Nick doesn't bring enough edge to his singing. I think he could do it, but he just doesn't sing that way, not since he was young. I mean, he does it live sometimes actually, and I love it, but not in newer recordings for some reason.

Summary of the album talk, which someone else may do by the time I post this.
-Chad currently tracking drums and Tim has tracked a few guitar parts - this has already been said in another recent interview
-Chad records a lot in 1 take as opposed to piecing things together - he's very exact about his process

Anything else of note? Not really.
-His favorite live songs to play are more "rarer" like Galaxy, Offbeat Bareass, Tribute, Bomb The Town. Said this summer was "greatest hits heavy".
-Guy interviewing P-Nut was on Frolic Room's dick, P-Nut said he hadn't heard it in a while and said it came up randomly recently and he digs it. It's the only song he's ever recorded using a pick. We knew that.
    -He likes the cruises.
-Likes the ups and downs of Vegas. Name dropped that he's able to text Pen Jillette when he's there to see if he'll come.
    -Billy likes to drink soda.
    -Miss Lippy's car....is green.

What songs are through and through rockers? Esp in the last 15 years? Nothing on Mosaic...PM, Too Late, One and the Same are the heaviest but they have lots of quieter and lighter parts and singing. There really aren't a whole lot. We might just have different ideas of what through and through rockers are? What's your best examples?

I didn't say it was entirely happy happy, haha, but it has a lot of it percentage-wise. The first three songs are straight up through and through happy happy happy. Thanks, fans! Everything's great! Trouble talks about his past, but isn't pessimistic in the same way I'm thinking with Ebb and Flow and Five of Everything. Count Me In is happy happy happy. Rock on is criticizing someone else, but Great Divide does that, too. Weightless? Happy. What is deep about it? I like that song, btw, but it's def a positive song, nothing really negative about it. And A Ways is a trippy song, not happy or pessimistic, really. Ends on a big happy note "It'll be alright". 5 of the 8 songs are straight up positive, one is like man look at how much trouble I'd get into when I was younger, one is critical, one is trippy then happy. Over 50% of the album is straight up happy positive lol.

Eh, whatever, I don't see Five of Everything fitting well there. I think it fits well after Ebb and Flow and on Stereolithic >shrug<
