As a bass player, I feel like the bass has been more in the forefront on the last three albums than before. Seemed like in the past it mostly stood out if it was an intro or some sort of solo/breakdown.

Albums get remastered so that they adjust to the way speakers/amps are made today.... am I wrong on this? Who are our audio people?

The speakers are engineered today in such a way that they are not neutrally balanced.. meaning there is a hidden pre set EQ range hardwired into the speakers... seems like this has been the case since the dawn of time but I think it’s even more so today?

that’s why pop songs sound good and old shit sounds old.. pop songs were mastered last month to sound good on speakers in your car manufactured last year....

I’d loved to be educated on this by somebody if I’m wrong..

You're giving too much credit to the hardware. All 311 sounds muffled and quiet next to most other music. Early 2000's NIN is loud, crisp, and full compared to any 311.

I have MP3's on my phone that I originally downloaded in the year 2000 that sound better than anything 311 has put out in the last decade.

I have a feeling Stereolithic's Max DR can be attributed solely to Existential Hero, which to my ears, sounds leaps and bounds better than any other song on that album.

Evolver and Mosaic are 311's best sounding albums for me. Like @Running123, I really appreciate the relative prominence of the bass on Mosaic, but I like a prominent, good bass line better than basically any guitar riff.

It's not. The max DR comes from the wind chimes at the end. Whoever ran the DR should have excluded that track. Same with Transistor, the highest DR is from the space ship outro or whatever the hell it is.

    That's hilariously 311.

While I really love Stereolithic. It's really flat to me, it's like they flatlined the EQ and rolled with it. A few years ago I was listening to Stereolithic and it randomized to Pantera Far Beyond Driven. It was startling because Stereolithic was so quiet compared to Pantera.

This same thing happened the other day with 311 and an older Disturbed song. Startling mildly describes the difference in both volume and crispness.

Yeah, I'm not sure why 311 and Scotch went that route. Besides that one flaw, it's still a great album. Although, I really despise Revelation of the Year.

It’s not just a Sterolithic problem. It’s most of their work. I kind of expect it on first couple albums, but once they got some $ behind them, there’s really no excuse. I always find my self turning other bands music down quite a bit.

That's true. I collect albums/singles from my favorite bands. I hate paying for an album that sounds bad, but I gotta keep the discographies complete. Band-Maid Just Bring It is a fantastic album, but sound quality wise, it sucks.

The only reason to spend time and money to re master/ mix, or whatever , is if someone’s gonna buy it.
Let’s be real. 311 barely sell albums as it is. So no need to waste resources.

They seem to be in their own little world when it comes to sonics, which I think is the good and bad of working with Scotch. Like, he's not a total pro. Obviously, he's very creative and he has great chemistry with the band, but when you listen to his work producing 311, you can tell it's been a learning process for him. Especially from Stereolithic to Voyager. Production-wise, it's a long way from Ebb and Flow to Stainless.

I still think Existential Hero sounds better than everything else on Stereolithic. Maybe Made in the Shade gives it a run for its money.

For me, Made in the Shade sounds the best. But then again, there's not much to it.

I'm waiting on a Universal Pulse remaster. The other ones are passable. I don't want them to go back and overdo it (ala Pepper, Stick Figure, Rebelution where the bass seems to run about 6db too hot.)

The mix that we heard on the cruise was solid, then when we officially got UP upon first listen i was like wtf happen? Time Bomb and Wild Nights sounded great during the cruise preview, Scotch was involved to some degree with UP wasn't he? I get confused on the matter.

I wouldn't mind "Blue" being remastered for it's 25th anniversary (it would make sense) it already sounds great, but it could still sound EPIC. That album is solid. It's my 3rd fav album from the band.

On another note, why not release us Transistor (instrumental album) that's something the band should definitely consider imo.

The "cruise mix" of those songs has long been a tease to people not on board. I have watched a couple videos where people recorded the premieres and... it sounds the same to me. But that's through cell phone videos on Youtube, so not a great comparison.

Regarding Scotch, it he wasn't involved with UP - he came back in full for Stereolithic. And it showed.
