If you could have one wish for the new album, or one thing you could control, what would it be? Other than have Scotch as the producer and Feldmann far away from it - I think we all want that.

Mine is I wish for more songs that have Nick and SA sing/rap back and forth a lot. That's one of my favorite types of songs. Songs like Can't Fade Me, Mindspin, Borders, Omaha Stylee, My Stoney Baby, Uncalm, Crack the Code, Freak Out.

They did this more when they were younger. The Great Divide has this and it blew me away the first time I heard it - probably why it's my favorite from SL and an all time favorite.

That's my main wish. If I got to choose more things I'd say I want more Chad heavy stuff like Existential Hero (that song's too sick) and as always, more SA heavy songs and verses. Him and Nick harmonize really well together, I agree, but I really don't like how often it turns into Nick singing and SA backing, and basically making him seem like just a backup singer. I'd also like to hear SA singing and Nick backing, like on AAWTG, as they rarely do that. I don't like seeing SA pushed aside like he's not one of the 5 members or something, whether that's the band's decision or producer's or his own decision. So yeah...more SA.

Those are the main things I want, my single wish being more back-and-forth-Nick/SA songs.

I feel like I'll be saying this until the end of time but more SA.

Ultimately my wish for the album would be for them to get as nutty as they want on the album and maybe even shake some things up. So that means if we get some crazy synthed-out Chad stuff or more than 1-2 "epic" songs on the album then they should go for it. Like let's say it's a 14 track album. If some of those are 2-3 minutes and some of them are like 6-8 minutes, it should all be up for grabs for them.

I've really enjoyed Stereolithic and most of Mosaic, so I don't think they "need" to do anything in particular. But I do feel especially with Mosiac that Nick and whoever else still has some kind of image in his head of what they "should" be doing based on trends or whatever his younger hipster weakling songwriter friends are doing. I just want them to be themselves and let it rip.

I just want to be able to describe a majority of the songs on the album as “badass”. I can’t really articulate what that means, but I know it when I hear it. It sounds something like (recently) Wildfire, Too Late, Extension, Existential Hero, First Dimension, et al.

Every bandmember has gotten more skilled at their craft(s) since the last time they recorded and released an instrumental. I would love to get an instrumental that truly highlights their musical abilities.

Oh yeah I'd love that too. That again is something they can do and get as wild with it as they want to with no regard to having to figure out a vocal melody.

I was thinking about this and I realized they DID what I’ve been wanting them to do for so long, on Mosaic. Good beats, rapping, creative sonic exploration, unique electronic production touches, return of the swag. Their lyrics improved (on the non Feldmann songs). Honestly, I want Mosaic Part Deux.

What’s left? I guess I’d like to see them go even further with the untraditional song structures a la Grassroots and Transistor. I love that those songs changed on a dime, and at times felt like 2 to 3 songs in one. Those albums feel fresh and surprising to this day, because of that.

    Anyway, good thread.

Weird time signature stuff. Prog rock territory. Heavy on vox, ultra crunchy guitar. Experiment a bit. Think Nutsymptom but with their current skill set. I want some trippy effects and some raps too. Keep the conventional song structures to a minimum. I enjoy picking up new things everytime I hear a song.

If they ever actually release a fucking song called The Gene, I think this board can officially retire. We've won.

High energy swag. Like the early days. They don't have to stick to a simple rock rap formula by any means. Just go in with the intention to remind the world that 311's got the boom. That nobody can do it like 311. No more vocal heavy, slow plodding things that bog down the flow of an album. When they're tempted to write something like that I want them to go in the exact opposite direction. I want the album to literally set my fucking ears on fire.

Another thing I'd like is more short songs (under 3 min). I think they work really well when fit properly in an album's tracklist.....also helps that I tend to like shorter songs better lol. At least one would be cool.

This is a good point regardless, but Syntax made this request a no-brainer. I thought Syntax was underwhelming at first, but very quickly realized it's just an amazing track that shed any dead weight.

We can talk til breathless about punk songs being well under 2-3 minutes. But on pop levels... Evolver - Nick's "Beatles Album" - only two songs are sub-three minutes.

I grew up on The Beatles, still rank them as my favorite band no question, and they make up one of two tattoos I have. And to this day, two of their songs are insanely meaningful. "For No One" is my favorite Beatles song, and "I Will" was the first dance at my wedding.
