Snow is finally stacking up around here, so I figured it was time to hit the slopes. I think it is time to retire my old snow pants. They had been accumulating a collection of lift passes until a couple years ago.

It has been a while since I have added any tags since all the resorts have been doing RFID cards that you keep in your pocket. I have actually had kids on the slopes come up to me and ask what those tags are. Man the new tech makes me feel old...

Has anyone here skied Jackson Hole? I’ve never been and it’s on our short list for Feb. I’m a still a relatively new skier — I grew up in FL and didn’t learn until I was 25. I get out every couple of years, and this will only be my 6th time on the slopes. Everything I’m reading says it’s pretty hard. As long as I have a handful of easy blues, I’ll be entertained. Any insight would be appreciated.

JH has a reputation of being advanced, but there are plenty of blue runs. If I remember correctly, there are hardly any beginner runs. The terrain reminds me a lot of Snowbird which is also more catered to intermediate/expert skiers. If you are comfortable on blues, JH is a big resort and will have more than enough runs to keep you occupied for a day.

If you are still intimidated by some of the more advanced intermediate terrain, Jackson might not be good for you. In that case, I would recommend you drive an hour to Grand Targhee which is a beginner/intermediate resort.

My wife and I have been increasingly talking about moving to Colorado within the next couple of years. All this ski talk has got me thinking I'll be doing that ASAP.

8 new inches, first dump of the season
....and the overflow lot was full and a line wrapped around to get in, I was just going to go for a few runs after work so I turned around when I saw that.

These crowds might be the norm this year which sucks. Usually locals with passes at my mountain on weekdays, so far im seeing wayyyyy too many day passes even for the holidays.

We dont have a reservation system and Aspen raised the costs a ton over there to try to keep some people away so that might make more pick here.

I'm usually back east visiting family during the holidays, so I don't often even have a chance to ski during the holiday week, but even when I am around, I still avoid skiing during the holiday week. The crowds are ridiculous in normal years, and being around crowds who traveled from afar is borderline dangerous during the pandemic.

The one exception is New Year's Day. Most people get drunk on New Year's Eve and don't want to wake up early to go skiing. One year I wasn't doing anything on New Year's Eve, so I decided to crash early and go skiing on New Year's Day. I had one of my best powder days, and the place was empty (at least in the morning). We'll see how if that holds this year.

Holiday crowds should be gone after tomorrow

I have been jones'n for a good ski day. It's been a record dry winter in my area. Resorts seem to only have a few runs open and way too many people crowding them. Not worth it IMO.

Cabin fever has been taking it's toll. Instead of skiing, I decided to take a hiking trip in Zion. I never thought I would be hiking Angels Landing in January, but it was awesome. Usually the crowds and hotel prices are a big source of frustration when visiting, but given the time of year, the prices were low and there were very few people.

As much as I want to enjoy a really good day of skiing, I did not think about it once this weekend. Just enjoyed good cardio and great views.

    Great pics, @Brizz.

I started skiing in western New York on the shittiest man-made shit snow (“frozen granular”). The "shitty" snow in Utah is better than the best snow in New York.

TL;DR: I had a good "shitty" ski day at Alta today. :)
